If you are a General Practice (GP) trainee granted permission until four months after the end date on your CoS, you can do supplementary work during these four months, even if you are no longer working for your sponsor. In all other cases, you must remain working for your sponsor to be able to do supplementary work.
If the extra work meets the above requirements, you do not need to inform the Home Office before taking additional work.
On the other hand, if the second job you are interested in taking is not supplementary but secondary, you will need a new CoS for this second job. You must apply for a variation of permission in addition to the certificate and permission for your existing job. This is because working in the second job is not covered by your existing conditions.
You can only apply for further permission to stay for the second job once you have started working for your first sponsor. You must make a new application to confirm that you want to change your existing permission. The confirmation must include:
- Your full name.
- Date of birth.
- CoS reference number from the current permission.
- Confirmation of the date when the current permission expires.
If your secondary employment is approved, you will be varying your initial permission, and you will have two sponsors during the period both certificates are valid. Where you have a biometric residence permit (BRP), a new BRP card will be issued, and the CoS reference number displayed on the card will read ‘2 CoS as Letter’. This indicates that you have secondary employment.
Your approval letter will also state the primary and secondary sponsors and the employment end dates for each. You must keep the approval letter with your BRP card as proof of your right to work.
In conclusion, it is possible to have two jobs while on a skilled worker visa, but certain conditions must be adhered to. If you are interested in taking on a supplementary job, ensure it meets the abovementioned requirements. If you are interested in taking on a secondary job, you must apply for a variation of permission and get a new CoS for the second job.
