We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Olusegun Hammed-Alli , a candidate running for the Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) Aberdeen South. Olusegun is passionate about creating more employment opportunities for youths, as well as providing free school uniforms for S1 students and free train transport for young people. Here’s what he had to say.
Q: Hi Olusegun, thanks for taking the time to speak with us today. Can you tell us a bit about your background and what inspired you to run for SYP?
A: Sure, I am a high school student and I’ve always been passionate about creating more opportunities for young people. I’ve seen firsthand how difficult it can be for youths to find employment, especially with the current economic climate. I also believe that education should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation. These are the reasons why I decided to run for SYP.
Q: That’s great to hear. Can you tell us more about your plan to create more employment opportunities for youths?
A: Yes, I believe that the government can do more to support young people in finding employment. My plan involves working with local businesses to create more job opportunities for youths. I also believe that internships and apprenticeships can be a great way to gain work experience and build connections in a particular industry. By providing more opportunities like these, we can help young people transition into the workforce more easily.
Q: What about your plan to provide free school uniforms for S1 students and free train transport for young people? How do you plan to make that happen?
A: I believe that education should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation. By providing free school uniforms for S1 students and free train transport for young people, we can remove some of the financial barriers that prevent young people from accessing education. I plan to work with the government to allocate funding for these initiatives and to work with schools and transportation providers to make them a reality.
Q: That sounds like a great plan. What do you hope to achieve if you are elected to SYP?
A: If I am elected, I hope to bring more awareness to the issues facing young people today and to create real change that will benefit them. I believe that by working together, we can create a better future for all young people in our community.
Q: Finally, what message do you have for young people who may be reading this?
A: My message to young people is to never give up on your dreams and to always believe in yourself. I believe that every young person has the potential to make a difference in the world, and I hope to help them realize that potential if I am elected to SYP.
Q: How would young people vote for you?
A: Voting opens on the 6th of November and ends on the 16th of November 2023. To vote young people should go to http://voting.young.scot input their 16 digit Scot card number which would then display their constituency. If their constituency doesn’t show South which is my constituency, they can select this and when they click on the South Constituency they should select me as the preferred candidate by putting me as number 1.
Thank you, Olusegun, for sharing your insights and plans with us. We wish you all the best in your campaign.

Wow! It’s nice to see a young black boy running for this. I also like his outfit, he looks so smart. I wish him the best.
